Hi anu, I'm first timer to your site. My 10 yr. old have many food allergies. It does get difficult when they can't eat anything but rice in the parties that too many a times have nuts. When ever I have guests over & if kids(guest) don't eat anything from the food I'm making I always make sure that I have something specially made for their kids. So it's difficult for me to understand why other hosts can't do little extra effort. for allergy reasons I always avoided parties but host most of them at my place instead....it's difficult for me to see everytime at b'day parties all the kids enjoying cake & she's the only one who is just looking & on top of that host asking "Oh she won't eat"....I always felt like saying "Yay, U guys don't even remember that one of your guest is allergic to eggs". Anyways this is going to be ongoing problem as once they start school, it's sometime difficult to make other parents understand that there are other allergies also and not only the peanuts. I wish all the schools had ban on b'day parties in the school. Btw i'm also in NJ.

I am 41 year old male and have had a known allergy to mustard (the whole plant) since I was tested at 12 years of age. It is a sneaky allergy and almost have to make an ass of myself in restaurants when inquiring about foods that are prepared with mustard. Funny thing is, I didn't like it until I knew I was allergic to it.

My 7 year old found out she was allergic to flax about 2 years ago, her doctor did prescribe an epi pen, although we have not had to use it. She did have a strong reaction of vomiting and said her "tongue was moving to the side of her mouth" (perception of a 5 yr. Old) I did not visibly see her tongue swelling- went by what she was telling me.They say the reaction gets worse each time you come in contact, so I would keep a close eye on it!

This information is incredible! I realized I was allergic to flax last year and am finding it more and more difficult to avoid. It has become an annoyingly "trendy" ingredient. I have only experienced the GI issues (sharp pains, nausea, etc), cold sweats, hives, and throat/ mouth itchiness, but I have not had trouble breathing. Does anyone know if this allergy can lead to something more severe, such as anaphylaxis?

I am 32 and became increasingly ill with digestive "problems" after age 19. At 25 I had a anaphylactic reaction to flax seed and since cutting it out (albeit the skin prick test was inconclusive real life tells me otherwise!) All the other GI symptoms have disappeared. Guess it was a slow build up of sensitivity and eventually a very scary allergy. Most people still do not believe me......sad. I have so far only met one other person with this allergy. Why on earth would someone make that up?? That and when I say I have this allergy half the people look at me and stare blankly.......

Thank you for the list of "other names" to watch for. I have had a few scary moments where it has been snuck into breads/salad dressings/oil based vitamins and omega eggs (guess the hens are fed flax but its not on the label - it is however on their website though and I filed a complaint that they should have all things listed in both places!). I will make sure to revisit this page.

Sad, its so healthy for you :( but hey at least I can have walnuts etc.

Thank you so very much for this. I think I had a severe allergic reaction to flaxseed yesterday. Very strong forced heartbeat after consumption of foods I made with it. I added flax into my diet about a month before any symptoms arose but recently started upping the amount I was consuming. Thanks again for all your dedication in helping others in need when hardly any help is out there. Means so much!!!

Thanks for the recipe! Now I wont worry about getting allergy symptoms. This is a cool food to make! I never thought that this is possible because as a person who has allergy you have to be always mindful about the stuffs mixed inside a food.

RAST tests are super inaccurate. I have a life-threatening allergy to peanuts amongst other things and I have tested both negative and positive and extremely high on the RAST test. If your allergist thinks it is safe you may want to try a skin test. RAST tests test if your blood reacts to the allergen but they are known for being inaccurate and should not be used alone to make a diagnosis or rule out an allergy.

LOL...I know just what you mean. I keep thinking about how evil flaxseed is when I think about all the trouble I've gone through the last two and a half months because of it, with the stomachaches, stopping all my new supplements and food to figure out what's causing my high eosinophil counts, and dealing with some major insomnia since shortly after I had stopped everything. I went on Ambien CR a couple of weeks ago, which didn't work, so my doctor put me on Restoril, which seems to work a lot better. Also, when I went back on all my old supplements to see if stopping them was the reason for my sleep problems, I decided to try fish oil since the triple omega capsule I was using had flax oil in it. I think the fish oil prolonged my insomnia. When I halved the dosage of the fish oil, I slept better but still awakened several times in the night. Oddly enough, not using it at all had as bad an effect as too much. I then decided to try to find a triple omega formula that had no flax oil in it and found Arctic Naturals Total Omega at Walgreen's. I had one of the best nights I'd had on the Ambien the night after I started taking it (one a day). I've been doing really well on the Restoril, so I'm not sure how much the triple omega is still helping. Unfortunately, it's not as good as Sundown Naturals, but at least it helps me sleep, and I don't have to worry about reacting to flax oil. I will definitely NOT miss flaxseed and would just as soon never set eyes on it again!
